Events such as the alps fair, Saint Nicholas procession, folk-music meetings and much more are still a part of village life, as are the numerous village fairs in the warmer months of the year.
This event takes place the second weekend of November. A “Lamentation” is held in the village square which looks back in satirical fashion on village life during the year gone by.
In the evening the alpine dwellers celebrate amongst themselves in the Schützenhaus. In the „alpine dwellers’ lamentation“ their activities during the year will be examined in detail.
In a festive but reflective manner we celebrate St. Nicholas on the 1 st Saturday in December.
Throughout the day the traditional “Chlausmarkt” (market) is held in the centre of the village. Around 8 p.m. almost 400 bearers of illuminated bishops’ mitres, men cracking long goat whips, men swinging cow bells and horn blowers gather at the entrance to the village. The street lighting is extinguished.
St. Nicholas enters the village in his coach between the mitre bearers and men swinging cowbells. Full of emotion the cowbell swingers prepare for their dramatic finale on the village square.
A pretty house - where Isabelle Kaiser, the poet, once lived – with its idyllic garden at Dorfstrasse 30 it is the centre of the cultural association where exhibitions, readings, concerts and other cultural events are organised.
A variety of arts and crafts can still be found – or are now really established – in Beckenried.
